NAMING

The Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness is named in honor of Greensboro businessman and civic, community and philanthropic leader Leonard J. Kaplan (1929-2015). Committed to “making the world a better place,” Leonard and his wife, Tobee (1933-2016), made an indelible mark on the local community and the world at large through extraordinary philanthropy and leadership in the areas of education, arts, health and social services.

Leonard, a native of High Point, built his family’s janitorial supply company — Kay Chemical Company — into a major local employer and worldwide supplier of cleaning products. Through their family foundation, Leonard and Tobee were tireless supporters of Greensboro Urban Ministry, the United Way, the Moses Cone cardiac unit, the Women’s Resource Center, Habitat for Humanity and countless other causes in Greensboro and throughout the state and nation.

In Leonard’s honor, Tobee created a permanent endowment to support health and wellness programs at UNCG. It was her hope that the gift will not only benefit the UNCG community for years to come, but will also inspire others to use their talents and resources to improve the world around them.
