How four campus rec centers across the U.S. are helping students put their mental wellness first.
Mental Health Awareness Month may be over, but colleges across the U.S. are continuing to prioritize student well-being with creative, accessible programming. Through wellness hubs, fitness programming and social events, these four universities give students a variety of ways to put their well-being first.
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Athletics and Recreation Center provides students with resources to support their full well-being through unique programs, workshops and coaching. Wellness and mindfulness workshops give students the opportunity to relax and manage stress in a supportive environment. The campus rec department also has a consistent lineup of events to support mental well-being like Illini Wellness Week and Fresh Check Day.
Clemson University offers well-being initiatives through the Fike Recreation Center, including the Wellness Zone. Designed to target all aspects of wellness, the center includes a holistic virtual fitness space with zero gravity chairs and an interactive TV featuring content such as yoga, mindfulness and meditation. Clemson’s campus rec department also offers educational wellness classes and outdoor experiences, like aromatherapy courses and botanical garden walks.
The Well-Being Hub at East Carolina University gives students the space to relax and unwind while fostering engagement. Located in the Health Sciences Campus Recreation Center, the hub gives students access to massage chairs and meditation space. It’s also stocked with health and hygiene products, making it a go-to stop for relaxation and daily needs. The hub also puts on weekly events like Therapeutic Thursday and Fresh Food Friday to further fostering healthy habits.
Ohio University offers many different well-being resources through their campus recreation center. The Well-Being Wing offers students a place to better their mental, emotional, physical and social wellness. The center is located in the Ping Recreation Center and has well-being coaches, small group sessions and daily activities. The wing also includes the Well-Being Suite, equipped with massage chairs, a wellness pod, light therapy, weighted blankets and more.
These campus rec centers show that meaningful wellness support isn’t limited to just one month. Through restful environments, engaging programs and inclusive events, many universities are fostering mental and physical well-being all year long.
