Mission
Campus Recreation at the University of Vermont (UVM) is committed to making student participation in recreational activities an essential component of the UVM experience. By providing outstanding leadership and a variety of high-quality program offerings, we meet the recreational interests of a diverse student body. Our efforts are focused on activities that create positive social interaction, opportunities for education and development, and promotion of healthy lifestyles among students, faculty, staff and community.
Vision
Campus Recreation at the University of Vermont is built upon a foundation of programming excellence in fitness and wellness, informal recreation, instructional programs, intramural sports, physical education, and youth and community programs.
The efforts of a highly-qualified, enthusiastic and professional staff ensure a quality recreational experience for the UVM community. Experiential education and leadership opportunities are offered to participants, students and part-time staff which complement the educational mission of the university. These opportunities add to the growth and development of all involved with Campus Recreation.
Newly constructed state-of-the-art recreation facilities as well as effective and appropriate use of financial, technological, physical and human resources will drive the future improvements and advancement of the program. Campus Recreation strives to be a progressive leader on campus and in the field of university recreation.

Description of Facility(s)
Patrick-Forbush-Gutterson Athletic Complex
The Patrick-Forbush-Gutterson Athletic Complex located at 97 Spear Street in Burlington, is a shared facility that serves Varsity Athletics, Physical Education and Campus Recreation. This 303,000-square-foot facility provides the university community with ample opportunities to satisfy their recreational needs.
Areas within the facility include:
- Gucciardi Fitness Center.
- Group Fitness Hub which features two multi-purpose rooms and an indoor cycling studio.
- The MAC which has two basketball hoops, two automated/retractable overhead volleyball systems, dasher boards and two retractable indoor soccer goals. Courts are lined for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, indoor soccer and floor hockey.
- Bouldering wall.
- Forbush Natatorium
- Indoor lower and upper running tracks and sports courts with six basketball hoops and courts lined for basketball, volleyball and pickleball.
- Gutterson Ice Rink.
- Indoor turf.
- Two squash courts.
- Patrick Gym with six basketball hoops and courts lined for basketball, volleyball and badminton.
- Patrick Multipurpose Studio.
- Three general and five single occupancy locker rooms.
- Outdoor spaces including Virtue field with field turf, Moulton Winder Field with Astro turf, grass fields and a 5K running loop.
Programming
Student Professional Development
- Employs 200 students.
- Offers a comprehensive, theory-based student development program centered around the NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) Career Readiness Competencies, which guides students through thinking critically about their personal and professional skill development and how their work with Campus Recreation can support them on their professional journey.
Fitness and Intramurals
- 75-plus group fitness classes per week.
- 26 intramural leagues and tournaments throughout the academic year.
Course Credit
- Offers 25 different one credit physical activity classes over the course of the academic year, typically awarding approximately 1,300 credits to students.
Rec Respect
To honor Campus Recreation’s mission, vision and values, RecRespect is about cultivating a culture of respect, inclusion and community where everyone feels safe, welcomed and valued in a judgment free environment. All belong here.
A few examples include:
- Partnering with UVM Girl Gains to host female and non-binary identifying patron fitness center and bouldering wall hours.
- Offering accessible sports during RecFest.
- Mixed-gender leagues and tournaments.
- Accessible equipment in the fitness center.
- A social media campaign promoting respectful participation and use of Campus Recreation facilities and programs.
- Community programs include American Red Cross certification courses and swim lessons.
- Annual signature events including RecFest, Indoor Mini Triathlon/Food Drive, Get Jacked Challenge and the Move More March Challenge.
- 200-hour yoga teacher training.
Fun Facts
- In October of 2022, UVM Campus Rec opened a brand-new bouldering wall within a renovated MAC space. 2,983 different people have used the wall since its opening.
- In 2024, UVM Campus Rec is embarking on a project to enhance fitness center square footage and equipment.
- As voted on by students, the Campus Rec lounge is one of the best study spots on campus.
- In the fiscal year of 2023, UVM Campus Recreation served 10,652 unique users who engaged 352,389 times.
