Drexel University Recreation (UREC) recently transformed its fitness spaces by adding customized free weights, selectorized and plate-loaded strength equipment from Matrix Fitness in the recreation center.
Patty Oller, the associate director of Recreation, Facilities and Operations, said department leadership was looking to upgrade their workout equipment offerings, and they quickly learned why the vendor was the best option for their school.
Below, Oller shares what the partnership with Matrix Fitness includes, why the move was made, advice for other campus recreation leaders and more.
Campus Rec: What changes have been made as part of this move? What pieces were added?
Patty Oller: We added more strength equipment, like more squat racks and benches to fit the fitness trends of our students and members. We made quite a few changes to the layout as well, adding in more open spaces for self-led, functional training workouts and being intentional with the flow of equipment in the facility.
CR: Specifically, detail the decision to add more strength training. Why did you all feel like this was necessary?
PO: Fitness trends are always changing. We wanted to cater to what our students and members were doing to meet or challenge their wellness goals. We saw an increase in students and members wanting to add strength training to their fitness routines, so we selected more strength options to support that trend. The addition of the open space for more functional strength training workouts allows for flexibility for students and members.
CR: What are the benefits of making the equipment branded with school logos?
PO: It allows us to show pride and commitment to our university, students, members and the Drexel community.
CR: What’s the reaction been like on campus to the change?
PO: The reaction to the equipment refresh by both students and members has been very positive. We are continuously asking for feedback so we can continue to provide the best experience possible.
CR: What advice/tips do you have when it comes to making fitness center changes/renovations?
PO: Get feedback from the populations you cater to. Drexel UREC is open to both students and members of the community, so we have a more diverse population we strive to accommodate. We’ve found our students and members just want the opportunity to give input and that will result in more positive experiences and interactions. My second piece of advice is to challenge the status quo and don’t be afraid to try new things in the areas of layout, design, equipment selections, etc. These small changes and decisions were very well received because it added to the feel of a refreshed facility rather than just adding in new equipment.
