New tunable white system from Philips Lighting simulates the benefits of natural light. Enhanced control of light quality, color and intensity provides classrooms, libraries, and campus facilities with improved lighting options and flexibility.

Philips Lighting (Euronext Amsterdam ticker: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting, announced a new capability to mimic the look, feel and effect of natural light indoors by combining a luminaire and controls with tunable white lighting.

Occupants in indoor environments such as classrooms, libraries, lecture halls, and other campus facilities can now control and tune the lighting based on the time of day, availability of natural light, as well as individual taste and setting. By using a combination of light quality, color, and intensity, tunable white enables customers to specify their preference for the right light, with the right spectral content, at the right time in order to support a diverse range of daily activities.

“Lighting has a profound effect on the human body, how we feel, and how we function,” said Rahul Shira, Product Manager for Controls & Software, Philips Lighting. “Whether it is student focus in the classroom, concentration for testing, or an environment conducive to reading, it is quite easy and exceedingly beneficial to customize an indoor space and recreate the effects of natural light.”

Philips tunable white system affords schools greater flexibility and the capacity to easily change LED intensities and correlated color temperatures (CCT) from warm white (2700K) all the way to cool white (6500K) depending on the need or preference at any given time. In addition, when combined with lighting controls, Philips tunable white can provide centralized management and monitoring capabilities, and can also be integrated with other building systems such as heating, ventilation and cooling. The highly designed user interface provides a combination of predetermined settings that instantly change the ambiance of the room and supports the next scheduled task or spontaneous activity. Wireless control of the lighting installation can also be managed from an application on a mobile device.

Philips’ tunable white system is now available in North America across a select variety of Philips luminaires including:

  • Philips Ledalite BoldPlay and FloatPlane
  • Philips Day-Brite SofTrace, ClearAppeal, and EvoGrid
  • Philips Lightolier LyteProfile
