In this Leadership Viewpoint, Paul Geerdes, the managing director for TinyMobileRobots (TMR), shares how autonomous field-painting technology is helping campus recreation departments tackle some of their most persistent operational headaches.

He breaks down today’s biggest pain points for campus rec turf management — from chronic labor shortages and weather-related rework to human error, tight budgets and the growing complexity of maintaining multi-sport fields. He explains how traditional manual lining is time-consuming, paint-heavy and difficult to repeat consistently across a busy field schedule.

Geerdes highlights how TMR’s autonomous robots address these challenges with centimeter-level GPS precision and software templates that make switching between sport layouts fast enough to happen between games. He spotlights two recent examples: a university adopting the new Tiny Manager fleet platform to track robot performance and schedule maintenance, and a student who painted an entire campus parking lot while studying for finals — impressing her facilities director enough to free up budget for new intramural uniforms.

He closes with practical advice for campus rec directors: start by auditing your current labor hours and paint costs, view robotics as a staff multiplier rather than a replacement, explore revenue opportunities through field rentals and sponsor logos, and consider the added benefit of reducing staff exposure to chemicals and physical strain.
