In the above video, tour the Recreational Sports facilities and offerings at Indiana University (IU). IU Recreational Sports consists of seven locations and a comprehensive team of recreation and well-being professionals who provide student engagement and programming opportunities at seven different locations around our campus. Those facilities include:
  • The Student Recreational Sports Center (opened 1995)
  • The Bill Garret Fieldhouse (opened originally in 1928)
  • The Sembower Recreational Sports Field Complex (opened 2015)
  • Evan Williams Club Sport Field (opened in 2001)
  • IU Outdoor Adventures (operating since in 1972)
  • IU Outdoor Pool (Olympic pool, diving well, instructional pool, opened in 1964)
  • IU Tennis Center (indoor facility, opened in 1984)

Updates at Indiana University

One major focus over the last year has been IU-ifying the aging buildings and maximizing square footage to meet student needs, improve member experience, and enhance belonging through the built environment. Leveraging its multiple locations which each have different character helps Recreational Sports connect with its diverse student and campus community to help increase sense of belonging and well-being.

As such, 2024 has seen the following renovations and improvements at Recreational Sports’ facilities:

  • A complete overhaul of the main strength gym.
  • Converting three racquetball courts into strength studios.
  • Adding all-gender restrooms and showers.
  • Top-to-bottom repainting with a cream and crimson theme.
  • IU branding installations.
  • Digital screens for programmatic and campus partner promotional opportunities.
  • Addition of a dedicated wellness and recovery studio.
  • High and duct cleaning.
  • Reorganization of all storage areas.
  • Rearranged staff offices to increase team efficiency.
  • Opening a new outdoor court in one of IU’s three residential neighborhoods that includes a soccer turf, basketball court, six pickleball courts and an outdoor fitness court.
  • A $50 million state-funded renovation of the School of Public Health and the Bill Garrett Fieldhouse focused on accessibility and mechanical improvements.
