DeKalb, IL

 MISSION

Northern Illinois University Campus Recreation supports personal and academic success by providing outstanding recreation and educational experiences that are inclusive, stimulating and encourage a lifelong pursuit of wellness. The department fosters community cohesiveness by facilitating opportunities for engagement, leadership, development and collaboration.

PROGRAMMING

Northern Illinois Universities’ Campus Recreation center offers an array of custom programs and unique opportunities to university students and the surrounding community.

Outdoor Adventures is an exciting program within Campus Recreation. Students can take advantage of many hiking, camping, waterfall, caving and climbing areas within a fifty mile radius; plus the program offers day, weekend and extended trips locally and nationally. There are annual service trips helping National Park Systems along with campus activities such as evening skates, bike riding, canoeing, and cross-country skiing or camping on campus. Many activities are free plus there is an ample supply of equipment to rent as well.

Campus Recreation’s Fitness and Wellness programs provide beyond the standard exercise classes. Patrons can hire a Personal Trainer per semester and craft a customized fitness program to aid with campus life; or find camaraderie within Huskie Fit Club, compete in powerlifting, and broaden their horizons at Adaptive Sport Day.

A unique and powerful program complementing Our Fitness and Wellness is Nutrition Coaching. Patrons can schedule one-on-one Nutrition Coaching with Graduate-level nutrition interns under supervision of a Registered Dietitian. These coaching sessions deal with energy levels, gym results, nutritional cooking, and personal weight, plus eating out, at the dining halls or over the holidays. Our Nutrition program is structured to meet individual needs.

On the lighter side, our Aquatics program offers a range of events aimed to de-stress and offer big fun! Glow Swim, Canoe Battleship, Yoga Pool and Kayak Pool are some unique events providing a sweat-free workout. Aquatics also offers swimming lessons for toddlers through adults. Patrons can become Red Cross certified Lifeguards, or renew certification at our pool too.

Always popular Intramurals offers students a chance to continue a sport from High School and stay competitive. Plus there are over 30 Sport Clubs formed for players to add their unique sport to the competitive ring. You can even start a Sport Club with 3 friends and compete regionally.

Campus Recreation hasn’t forgotten Staff, Faculty and Community members. We offer Rec Rewards to frequent users, and an incentive program, Step Your Way to 10K. All are welcome to become members of Campus Recreation year-round, to take advantage of our facilities and programs.

NIU Campus Recreation is filled with opportunities to be involved, custom tailor or have fun working out on your way to wellness.
