Mission

The mission of Texas A&M University is to promote activity, wellness and development by providing high-quality, inclusive experiences and facilities for students and the community.

Facility Descriptions

The Department of Recreational Sports (Rec Sports) manages six facilities spread across campus, from recreational centers to playing fields. The six facilities offer a versatile range of amenities allowing patrons a space to work out, play and relax.

The main Student Recreation Center — known as The Rec — serves as the department’s flagship facility. With over 500,000 square feet of recreational space, The Rec features expansive strength and conditioning areas, an indoor track, four pools, multiple gymnasiums, multi-purpose studios, two bouldering walls and a 44-foot climbing tower.

Complementing The Rec is the Southside Rec Center, a modern 63,000-square-foot facility that allows easy access to recreation for those living on the south campus. From bouldering walls and indoor multi-sport courts to outdoor sand volleyball courts and strength and conditioning areas, the facility offers a balance of fitness and play.

The Polo Road Rec Center is the third recreation center on campus, which features a comprehensive weight room with cardio and functional strength areas. Conveniently located near the engineering complex, it offers students a well-deserved mental break between classes.

The Penberthy Rec Sports Complex spans approximately 50 acres of natural grass and artificial turf fields. Divided into two complexes — Penberthy South and North — the fields support intramurals, club sports and informal recreation.

For racquet enthusiasts, the Omar Smith Instructional Tennis Center features 15 tennis courts and 10 pickleball courts, creating an inviting space for recreational and competitive play.

Additionally, Rec Sports also utilizes the Physical Education Activity Program (PEAP) Building. In partnership with the Department of Kinesiology, PEAP serves as a hub for academic courses, multi-purpose rooms and courts, blending holistic wellness with student recreation.

With the potential of building an additional recreation center in the coming years, these facilities reflect Rec Sports’ commitment to providing accessible recreation opportunities across campus.

Programming Highlights

Rec Sports offers a range of programs that support every student, from competitive athletes to those trying something new. Across eight core areas, it creates opportunities for fitness, recreation and outdoor experiences.

With over 100 group fitness classes each week, Fitness and Wellness anchors student engagement with offerings ranging from Pilates and yoga to dance and kickboxing.

For those drawn to recreational sport, Intramural Sports engages over 16,000 participants annually, offering a wide range of activities in an inclusive environment where students can create their own teams, join existing ones or participate as free agents.

For a higher level of play, Sport Clubs elevate the competition by supporting over 40 student-led clubs that compete at regional and national levels.

Aquatics stands out as a unique program area, serving both Texas A&M students and the broader community by hosting events ranging from NCAA competitions to youth and high-school swim meets.

Beyond campus facilities, Outdoor Adventures expands recreation into the natural world, offering students opportunities to connect with nature through a variety of outdoor trips. The Outdoor Program also manages the four indoor climbing facilities managed by the department.

Strength and Conditioning delivers structured training programs and personal training services for students at every level. With certified trainers and state-of-the-art weight rooms, the program supports students in building strength, confidence and long-term fitness goals.

Youth Programs extends Rec Sports’ impact beyond campus by engaging children in active experiences through extended camps during breaks.

While fitness is a strong focus, not everyone wants to sweat — but most everyone enjoys recreation. To meet this need, Rec Sports is developing a new program area, Leisure and Instructional Programs, which will offer non-academic classes across a wide range of interests.

These program areas offer a dynamic range of opportunities for students, encouraging them to try new activities while continuing to engage with their personal favorites in campus recreation.

Fun Facts

  1. Rec Sports employs approximately 1,000 students at any given time, making it the largest student employer on campus.
  2. The department’s $28 million annual operating budget supports the wide range of programs and facilities that students and members rely on.
  3. Rec Sports facilities welcomed over 2 million visits last year, including over 50,000 unique students.
  4. What began as an intramural department over 100 years ago has grown into a full-fledged Recreational Sports program, engaging thousands of students and visitors each year.
