The Final Exam is your chance to get to know leaders in the industry. For the November/December 2023 issue, Campus Rec Magazine spoke with Becky Todd, the assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs and executive director of University Recreation at the University of Arkansas.

1. How did you get started in the industry?

I began as an intramural sports official as a first-year student at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. During my undergraduate education, I also worked for the city parks and recreation department. I moved on to be a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas and then worked full time at the University of Akron, the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Tennessee before returning to work at the University of Arkansas.

2. How would you go about describing campus recreation at the University of Arkansas?

I have often described our department as a sleeper among NIRSA schools. I’m surrounded by excellent professionals who work to provide high-quality opportunities to the students on our campus.

3. What has been one of the biggest challenges you have faced throughout your career?

One of the biggest challenges over my career has been navigating through a personal situation that led to a leave of absence. When I returned to work, my colleagues were very gracious and supportive. The entire experience fundamentally changed the way I lead because I realized how critical it is to balance one’s strengths with vulnerability and empathy in leadership.

4. What has been one of the biggest accomplishments of your career?

Helping lead University Recreation through a time of significant growth at the University of Arkansas. The student enrollment growth has allowed our department to grow and expand. We have added facilities and are beginning a renovation of our main facility. Having Venus Williams as a guest at our Tennis Center grand opening was pretty fun, too.

5. What is one lesson you have learned that other recreation professionals might benefit from?

To always stay open to new ideas — you never know where it may take you.

6. What is one fun fact about yourself others may not know?

I love to bake and have several blue ribbons for my cookies.
