From Warehouse to Wellness Hub at the University of Mississippi

Mission

Campus Recreation provides outstanding services, inclusive programs and educational opportunities to empower the University of Mississippi community in the pursuit of lifelong well-being.

Facility(s) Description

South Campus Recreation Center (SCRC)

The South Campus Recreation Center earned the 2021 NIRSA Outstanding Facility Award. The 98,000-square-foot facility includes over 25,0000 square feet of fitness space, functional indoor/outdoor training zones, three fitness studios, two basketball courts, a multi-activity court, walking/jogging track, classroom with a demonstration kitchen, indoor climbing wall with a bouldering area and a convenience store. Two recreational fields are adjacent to the SCRC.

Turner Center

The 155,000-square-foot Turner Center includes a four-court gymnasium, indoor walking/jogging track, fitness center, three fitness studios, a 65-yard indoor pool, racquetball/squash courts, functional training spaces, eight outdoor pickleball courts and three outdoor tennis courts.

Blackburn-McMurray Outdoor Sports Complex (OSC)

This facility includes intramural sports fields and sand volleyball courts that are available for recreational use. A 23-hole disc golf course and the FitRig, a functional training system and space, are both available for the university community. Two fields for sport club practices and competitions are also located at the Outdoor Sports Complex, as well as an outdoor challenge course with both low and high elements.

Programming Highlights

Fitness

Trash Can Friday Flow Yoga in the Grove is a free yoga class every Friday before home football games occurring in the Grove during the university’s Trash Can Friday tradition.

Outdoors

The Outdoors program supports accessible programs such as Free Fridays at the Challenge Course. Multiple trip experiences are offered each semester throughout the region.

Intramural Sports

Campus Recreation and Special Olympics College offer Unified Sports in multiple activities. Ole Miss and Mississippi State have competed in the Unified Egg Bowl flag football game since 2016.

Sport Clubs

Campus Recreation currently helps support 31 sport club student organizations.

Aquatics

The Swim 101 program is a 45-minute introductory swimming program offered to students, faculty and staff to learn basic swimming and water safety skills.

 

Fun Facts

  • The South Campus Recreation Center (SCRC) was previously a factory and warehouse space which was repurposed and converted into an award-winning collegiate recreation facility.
  • Since opening the SCRC, student participant visits have increased by over 30%.
  • About 70% of undergraduate students utilize Campus Recreation facilities or programs each semester.
  • Campus Recreation is the largest student employer at the University of Mississippi, employing over 250 students.
  • Over 1,100 University of Mississippi employees are Campus Recreation facility members. A university program supports employee well-being by offering facility memberships for $5/month.
  • Three of the past 12 NIRSA Student Leaders have been graduate assistants in our program.
  • Campus Recreation has been honored through the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools National Recognition Program as one of the Top 30 schools in the nation for supporting Unified Sports.
