From groundbreaking programs to inspiring initiatives, 2024 has been an incredible year for campus recreation. Let’s take a look back at six cover stories that defined innovation, inclusivity and impact in this industry.
University of New Mexico: A Destination of Enchantment
In the first issue of the year, we featured the University of New Mexico’s (UNM) campus recreation program isn’t just about fitness — it’s a celebration of culture, community and inclusion. Nestled in the stunning landscapes of the Southwest, UNM’s recreation facilities and programs are designed to be as enchanting as the state itself. By blending cultural heritage with cutting-edge amenities, they offer students a unique environment to grow physically, socially and mentally.
Inclusivity is at the heart of their efforts. UNM ensures that every student, regardless of background or ability, feels welcome and supported. Their approach goes beyond the gym floor, embracing the spirit of New Mexico and making recreation a truly immersive experience. This destination of enchantment sets a standard for how campus rec can reflect and uplift the culture it serves.
Auburn University: When Two Become One
Auburn University demonstrated that sometimes, the best way forward is to combine forces. By uniting fitness and wellness services under one roof, Auburn redefined student engagement. This strategic merger didn’t just streamline operations — it created a dynamic space where students can access everything they need to thrive.
The integration of wellness and recreation fosters a holistic approach to health. Auburn’s model is a testament to the power of collaboration, proving that when departments work together, they can achieve far more than they can apart. This story of unity and innovation provides a blueprint for other campuses looking to enhance their offerings.
Northern Michigan University: Small but Mighty
Northern Michigan University (NMU) may be small with a team of three professional staff, but their Campus Recreation program is anything but limited. In 2024, NMU showcased how creativity, resourcefulness and community partnerships can turn a small department into a powerhouse of student engagement. Despite having fewer resources, NMU offers a wide range of innovative programs that meet student needs and encourage participation.
The key to their success? An unyielding commitment to making the most of what they have. By thinking outside the box and fostering relationships with local organizations, NMU ensures that students have access to high-quality recreation. This “small but mighty” approach is an inspiration for campuses of all sizes.

Missouri State University: Creating Good Citizens
At Missouri State University (MSU), recreation is about more than physical fitness — it’s about building character and creating good citizens. Their unique approach integrates civic engagement with recreation programs, encouraging students to give back to their community while staying active.
This year, MSU’s efforts stood out for their emphasis on social responsibility. Through service projects, community partnerships and leadership opportunities, they’re shaping students who understand the value of helping others. It’s a model of wellness that extends far beyond the walls of the gym and into the heart of the community.
Project COURAGE: Moving the Needle
For our September/October issue, we highlighted the work being done by Project Courage, a game-changing Matrix Fitness initiative that will impact the entire campus rec industry. With a panel of directors, the team leading the charge, recreation professionals and students at historically black colleges and universities are ensured impactful career opportunities.
At its core, the initiative aims to break down systemic barriers and foster pathways for historically underrepresented groups. You’ll find this initiative is not just about having necessary conversations; it’s about taking meaningful action to better the current state and the future of campus recreation.
Indiana University: Collective Commitment
Finally, in the last issue of the year, we saw the power of collective commitment at Indiana University (IU). Their focus on teamwork and collaboration has set the stage for future growth. With a vision rooted in holistic wellness and inclusion, IU’s Campus Rec program is building something extraordinary for its current and future student body.
Recreational Sports’ focus on holistic wellness ensures that students have access to programs that support their physical, mental and social health. IU’s approach is a model of what can be achieved when a department aligns around a clear vision and works together to achieve it. Their collective commitment is paving the way for a stronger, more inclusive future.
