Each year, NIRSA commemorates its founding on February 22 with the Recreational Sports and Fitness Day.
As stated on NIRSA’s website, the day remembers “the vision set in motion by Dr. William Wasson and his esteemed colleagues at the first NIRSA Conference: To celebrate health, activity, competition and inclusivity.”
As a result, campus recreation departments are celebrating around the country. So, here are what three schools are doing to celebrate:
The University of Tennessee
As part of its Student Life Wellness Wednesday weekly activities series, RecSports at the University of Tennessee will be hosting NIRSA Rec Day on February 23.
“We will have an inflatable obstacle course, nine-hole miniature golf course and ping pong toss activities,” shared Mario Riles, the assistant director of Intramurals and Sports Clubs. “Individual winners will be rewarded a grand prize for each activity, and we will have other snacks, giveaways and shirts to pass out to everyone that attends.”
Texas Christian University
This year, Texas Christian University (TCU) will have all program areas displayed in the main lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities and prizes will be provided throughout the day.
Some of those activities include:
- A massage chair.
- Trivia contest on wellness education topics.
- Fitness challenges for rewards.
Jay Iorizzo, the director of TCU Campus Recreation, said Rec Day is always a highlight of the year. “We want to engage students and faculty members in a better understanding of what we do as Campus Recreation,” he said.
