Just Keep Rolling with JMU and Key Log Rolling

“That’s how I roll” is a popular slang phrase, meaning it’s how someone is or how they work.

At James Madison University (JMU), how the aquatics center rolls is quite literal: They have partnered with Key Log Rolling and have been rolling that way every since.

After first hearing about the sport, Matt Lovesky, the assistant director for aquatics and safety, became interested in what it was all about. He explained he did his research and even took their instructor course. Through all of his findings and experience, he decided his facility needed the tools to increase the fun and engagement for healthy activities at JMU.

Below, Lovesky shares all about his experience with Key Log Rolling, from how it’s increased participation to their excellent and personal customer service:

CR: How did you discover Key Log Rolling?

ML: I learned about log rolling from our director back in 2014. He asked me if I had ever heard of log-rolling, and my response was something to the tune of, ‘No, but I think I want to!’ From there I did some research and found Key Log Rolling, enrolled in their instructor course and ultimately purchased two Key Logs for our facility that are used every day.

CR: Why did you partner with Key Log Rolling?

ML: We partnered with Key Log Rolling first and foremost because it is fun. You can’t log roll and not smile. It also gets people using our aquatics center that wouldn’t normally step foot on a pool deck. Our goal is to get 100 percent of our students engaged in healthy activities, and the log rolling program has without a doubt got students participating in our facility that were not regular users prior to log-rolling.

CR: What do you like about partnering with Key Log Rolling?

ML: The Key Log Rolling team is great to work with because they clearly have passion and enthusiasm for the sport of log-rolling. They keep coming up with more ways to get involved with the sport, such as the collegiate tournament series — which was a blast. When you see them at conferences, they know who you are and take the time to catch up with you, which I think really speaks to how they operate and how much they really value their customers.

CR: How does this partnership benefit your rec center?

ML: I’d say the biggest way that Key Log has benefited our rec center is through the additional programming it has allowed us to do in the pool area. As I mentioned earlier, we aspire to get everyone at our university engaging in healthy activities, and the Key Log helps us attract participants who would not have otherwise utilized our facility. When we do special events at our facility and people see the Key Log, it immediately becomes a bucket list item for them to participate in during their time at the university.

CR: Was there anything that pleasantly surprised you about working with Key Log Rolling?

ML: Nothing was really a surprise because all of my interactions have been so positive with them.
