Mission

Quinnipiac University (QU) Recreation and Wellness underscores the school’s commitment to educating the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Through a wide variety of inclusive programming and student employment opportunities, Recreation and Wellness is part of QU’s “University of the Future” strategic plan and helping students to become well-rounded, 21st century professionals.

Description of Facility(s)

Weight Room

Outfitted with top-of-the-line equipment from Eleiko and Matrix, this new weight room is three times the size of the previous. This space has innovative equipment such as a plate-loaded hip thrust machine and rotational dumbbells. You will also find adaptive equipment, as the Recreation and Wellness Center is home to all QU community members.

Cardio Zones

Three specific cardio zones line the exterior windows of the building so students can take in the dynamic views of the campus. All zones are equipped with Matrix equipment, while the Cardio Zone on the first floor has six adaptive equipment pieces to ensure an inclusive experience for students, faculty and staff of all abilities.

Climbing Wall and Outdoor Recreation

The climbing wall is 27-feet-high and offers four lanes. Two are auto-belay specific and two are top-rope specific with mock lead climbing capability. All necessary equipment is provided free of charge. Students and staff can also take a belay clinic and be able to check out a belay device to use during their time at the climbing wall. The front desk is also a spot for equipment checkout for outdoor trips including camping gear, ice climbing, snowshoes and lawn games.

Recreation and Wellness Center

Fitness Studios

Featuring floor-to-ceiling windows and beautiful natural wood, the Recreation and Wellness Center fitness studios are amazing spaces to participate in a class, break a sweat, or simply stretch and breathe. With the “leave your baggage at the door” mentality, students can utilize the efficient built-in cubbies and storage space to place their things during classes and mentally prepare to focus on their wellness.

Spin Studio

The brand-new Spin studio features the new Spinner Chrono Power bikes, as well as stadium seating, customizable lighting and the Spivi leaderboard system.

Functional Training

This new addition to QU Recreation allows students to train on a turf facility with sleds, tire flips and more. Small group training classes are also a highlight of this area that overlooks the university’s varsity and recreational fields.

Recreation and Wellness Center

Athletic Training Suite

Club Sports athletes now have a home for treatment, taping and recovery in a new Athletic Training Suite. With two hydrotherapy tubs, six taping stations and a private assessment room, QU’s 425 Club Sports athletes can now return to action faster.

Health Services and Counseling Suites

Ran through a partnership with Hartford HealthCare, this space is 400% larger than QU’s previous on-campus facility. With expanded exam and clinician rooms and views of Sleeping Giant State Park across the street, students can now get an appointment quicker for their physical and mental health.

Programming

Fitness Classes

Taught by students for students, over 70 different fitness classes are available seven days a week at no extra cost. Ranging from yoga and Spin to small group training and bootcamp, all students can participate in classes they enjoy or even try a class they’ve never experienced before. All levels are welcome.

Recreation and Wellness Center

Competitive Sports

QU offers 21 Club Sports teams that compete both regionally and across the nation in a variety of sports and endeavors. Any student can also participate in the many Intramural sports and tournaments ranging from basketball and badminton to ultimate frisbee and bubble soccer.

Fun Facts

  • One of four studios has a fully retractable wall with an outdoor deck to provide an indoor-outdoor experience.
  • The Recreation and Wellness Center is home to a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen used to educate the Quinnipiac community in healthy and sustainable eating habits.
  • There are 2,700 Wood Panels and 19,120 pounds of free weights in the Recreation and Wellness Center.
  • QU will be applying for LEED Gold certification for the Recreation and Wellness Center as there are four live green walls within the facility. These walls all have live plants with internal irrigation that bring the outside in for the QU community.
  • QU is the 40th university to host Shake Smart — a fuel bar option for pre and post workout shakes and healthy eating options.
