In the above video, take a tour of Northern Michigan University and its rec facilities.

Facts about the Facility

Location: Marquette, Michigan

Outdoor Recreation Center Activities:

  • Waterfall hikes.
  • Cross-country skiing.
  • Ice climbing.
  • White-water rafting in Northern Wisconsin.
  • Free student rentals of fat tire bikes, snowshoes and more through a partnership with Noquemanon Trail Network.

Unique Winter Programming Activities:

  • Ice climbing.
  • Cross-country skiing.

Indoor Facilities:

  • 38-foot-tall Nicros climbing wall in the Physical Education Instructional Facility.

Community Involvement:

  • Access to fitness facilities and programs for faculty, staff, alumni and local residents.
  • Group fitness classes.
  • Kids Climb every Friday night.
  • Intramural sports including volleyball.

Fitness Center Equipment:

  • Equipment from Freemotion Fitness, Precor and TRUE Fitness.

Wildcat Fit Zone:

  • Established in 2017.
  • 10,500 square feet of space.
  • Located in the middle of the dorms.
  • Features 15 cardio pieces, dumbbells, cable cross and a fitness studio.
  • Satellite rec area providing a convenient workout option for students living in dorms.
  • Allows students to check out fat tire bikes and snow cleats.

Summer Camp Program:

  • Addresses a local shortage of childcare.
  • Offers activities for children from kindergarten to fifth grade.
  • Includes a smaller tween program.

Community Partnerships:

  • Sailing club team partners with the Marquette Yacht Club.
  • Crew team partners with the U.P. Rowing Club.
  • Community organizations provide equipment, waterfront space and training.

Recent Organizational Change:

  • In July 2023, Rec Sports moved from the Athletics department to the Northern Student Experience pillar at NMU
