Mission
The mission of Campus Recreation at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is to empower and enrich the FAU community through a variety of recreational and wellness opportunities that foster physical and social well-being.
Facility(s) Description
At FAU, our Campus Recreation facilities are designed to support the health, well-being and active lifestyles of students, faculty and staff. At the heart of our department is the state‑of‑the‑art Recreation and Fitness Center, including over 77,000 square feet with recently upgraded cardio and strength training equipment reflecting trends within the industry. This facility also features multiple indoor courts, a lap and leisure pool, spacious locker rooms, multipurpose studios with upgraded audiovisual equipment, and dedicated spaces for stretching and recovery.
In addition to the Recreation and Fitness Center, our outdoor amenities include the track and field complex featuring a synthetic turf field. We utilize natural grass fields at the Oxley Field Complex and Henderson Field Complex — all of which are used by intramural and sport clubs for games, practices, and special events. FAU’s Outdoor Adventure Basecamp supports programming for students and the university community through the use of their challenge course, climbing wall and high elements. We also have four outdoor basketball courts that provide program assistance for student organizations and events.
Additionally, FAU’s Campus Recreation facilities serve as a central gathering hub that promotes a sense of belonging among students. The department also provides many opportunities for student employment to expand upon career readiness skills throughout the program areas and facility operations. We serve as a major event space for the university by hosting homecoming programming, award ceremonies, career fairs, family weekend activities, housing check-in and more. All Recreation & Fitness facilities at FAU promote accessibility by offering adaptive equipment and programs so individuals of all abilities can participate.
Together these facilities create a robust environment encouraging movement, fostering physical and social well-being, and building community across the university.
Programming Highlights
FAU has a thriving competitive Sports Club Program competing on both a national and regional level. Over the past three seasons, the program has produced four National Championships, multiple club All-Americans and numerous players have been selected for national team rosters. What makes this program unique is the focus it has beyond the playing field providing over 150 student interns and volunteers with real world experience.
Being in Boca Raton has its advantages. The local business community is vibrant, which aids our student staff in Campus Recreation’s Challenge Program to have the opportunity to lead programming for numerous executives and corporate functions. This gives our staff hands-on leadership training and exposes them to the corporate world early with high-level organizations in the area.
Students come to FAU from all over the nation seeking its beach vibes and culture. Our lap and leisure pool is a hot spot for students to catch some rays and socialize with friends during our Fresh Friday pool parties. The Fitness and Wellness program delivers with a myriad of programming including specialty classes like stand-up paddle board yoga, personalized strength training and over a dozen intramural sports offerings.
RecFest, our marquee event, takes place in the spring and sees over 1,000 students enjoying the South Florida vibes with neon lights in the weight room and cardio facilities. The basketball courts host fitness classes like Zumba and yoga, along with glow-in-the-dark basketball tournaments. It’s a highlight of the year for many students.
