In this video, Heather Hartmann, the editor of Campus Rec Magazine, talks with Ruben Mejia, the executive vice president of SportsArt America. Mejia shares insights what he sees as the evolving challenges and opportunities within campus recreation. SportsArt has been one of the leading fitness equipment manufacturers for nearly 50 years.

Engagement is a crucial aspect of campus rec centers and Mejia explains that that is the most important solution to the challenge of getting people through the doors of these centers. He says that campus rec professionals need to find ways to blend traditional fitness with creative approaches to boost numbers. From social fitness events like group hikes, to cause-driven challenges like the 9/11 StairMaster tribute, Mejia highlights how purposeful programming can turn casual gym-goers into lifelong fitness enthusiasts. And with SportsArt’s focus on sustainability, events surrounding sustainable practices such as York University’s use of SportsArt’s power-generating cardio equipment, students can feel inspired to participate in meaningful recreation, as well.

Mejia advises professionals to listen to their students. By paying attention to feedback and testing new ideas, campus rec centers can help to create strong communities who value wellness, connection and sustainability.
