Campus Rec Wellness Events to Support Student Well-being Through Finals

From stress relief activities to movement-based programming, departments across the country are helping students navigate finals with campus rec wellness events.

As college students across the U.S. prepare for final exams and the end of the semester, many departments are hosting campus rec wellness activities to help alleviate student stress.

Whether it’s free fitness classes that help students stay active during a demanding time or events designed to give students time to rest and take a break, campus rec departments are leveraging their programming to enhance student well-being through high-stress times.

Check out some of the campus rec wellness events departments are hosting for finals week below and explore inspiration to bring back to your team for next semester.

Princeton University

Stress Less Week at Princeton University brings together various departments to host relaxing and fun activities for students leading up to finals. The Campus Recreation department founded the event and sponsors multiple events.

The week kicks off with Tranquil Tuesday, offering a free face mask and coffee voucher for students to use throughout finals. On Wellness Wednesday, students can get a free massage, pet dogs from the Puppy Pals Seeing Eye Club, and grab a smoothie and succulent.

Truck’d Out Thursday lets students fuel up with Chick-fil-A and take a break from studying with over 100 different video games to play. Throughout the week, the department hosts virtual stretch breaks over Zoom along with a variety of group fitness classes.

University of South Carolina at Beaufort

De-Stress Week at the University of South Carolina at Beaufort provides students with the opportunity to prioritize self-care. From group fitness classes and step therapy to pickup volleyball and a dodgeball tournament, there are plenty of options for students to stay active. Campus rec also offers window painting and a Mario Kart tournament for those who want to take a break.

Penn State University

Penn State Campus Recreation is hosting Rec & Relax for students during finals week. The Pottruck Health & Fitness Center will be filled with relaxing activities, including an open recovery room equipped with massage guns and chairs, as well as complimentary food and sleep kits. The department also offers board games, crafts and rock climbing throughout the day.

East Tennessee State University

Campus rec at East Tennessee State University offers students a variety of ways to relieve stress — whether it’s by slowing down or staying active. For those who want movement, the department offers stand-up paddleboard Pilates, a line dancing group fitness class and a holiday step class. A guided meditation gives students a few minutes of relaxation, and a sunset hike finishes off the week.

Supporting Students Through Finals

Between the wide range of services campus rec departments provide and their ability to collaborate with other on-campus partners, campus rec is uniquely positioned to support students’ holistic well-being throughout the year. Finals week wellness events demonstrate how small, intentional initiatives can make a meaningful impact. They also offer practical ideas that other campus rec teams can adapt within their own programs to further strengthen student wellness across their campuses.
